History of Fairford Leys

Fairford Leys is an urban village situated just outside the south western boundary of Aylesbury town, in Buckinghamshire.  Planning for the village began in the 1980's and 90's and the first residents moved into their new homes in 1998.

The village has its own village centre with traditionally fronted shops and a large community centre, an ecumenical church, restaurants, nursery, a Cannons health club with swimming pool, a Parish Council office and a village park.  We will also have our own pub soon!  We have our own dentist (NHS), Vet and Doctors surgeries and pharmacy.

A great deal of thought and planning by the architect, John Simpson, went into the design of the village. The aim was to create a village environment with architecture inspired by traditional Aylesbury styles and features. Mews areas and town houses abound with Victorian-style lamp posts and railings.  There are plenty of play areas distributed across the village.

A riverine corridor network through the village, with reed beds, streams and vegetation, creates pleasant walks and has a wide range of established wildlife. Just beyond the parish boundary are football pitches and a large pavilion, which is used for home matches by Fairford Leys Football Club.

The Parish Council has created a peaceful community garden at Dalwood Mews after receiving land donated to the council by the developers.

The land on which the village is built belongs to the Ernest Cook Trust – a charitable foundation with interests in land ownership, conservation, architecture, design and community development.  The Parish Council works closely with the Trust to ensure that the village will be maintained to a high standard and is in keeping with the original concept and design.
